Foojay is the place to be for the F<\/strong>riends O<\/strong>f O<\/strong>penJ<\/strong>DK. But what is the history behind this name?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFoo\u201d, as we know, is a placeholder in demo apps. This site and community is, likewise, a placeholder for your content, of all kinds. In particular, it is \u201cFoo\u201d for \u201cJ\u201d, i.e., \u201cJava\u201d. The name should really be \u201cFooJ\u201d but then it would be weird to pronounce. \u201cJay\u201d is the right way to pronounce the J in \u201cFooJ\u201d, which at the same time is the name of a bird, and gave us a nice base for a logo. The initial logo was created by a designer, and used as the basis for several variations by Gerrit Grunwald<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oracle owns the trademark on Java and OpenJDK, and it's not allowed to use those names freely ofr initiatives like Foojay. So that's how \u201cFoojay\u201d became the name for the place for Friends of OpenJDK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
